Sometimes I look at the list of every movie that’s won the Best Picture Oscar ever and I’m just like ‘…what the fuck was the Academy smoking that year’. The best example I can think of is 1998, when Shakespeare in Love won. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen that movie and it is really, really good. But then you see that it won seven, count them seven, Oscars including best picture.

Then you see it was up against Saving Private Ryan and just… what? I’ll admit that I’ve never actually seen Saving Private Ryan, but I’ve always kind of regarded it as one of those movies that you need to see, because it covers a really difficult topic in a beautiful, moving way that doesn’t shy away from the horrors associated with its topic. Kind of like Schindler’s List (which I also haven’t seen… shit, I really need to get my life together). 

I don’t know. Maybe I’m totally wrong. 

Maybe I have no business discussing films I’ve never seen.
